How to join an online walk indoors

Walking outdoors is fabulous for our mental and physical health. It gives us exposure to daylight which helps us feel more alert and sleep better. It gives us a natural high and an uplifting sense of possibility.

However, sometimes we can’t go out. For example, the weather may not be on our side, we have to quarantine, we can’t physically walk or we just have to stay in. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t join me for an online walk. That way you can still gain the wellbeing benefits of moving your body, being present, reflecting and connecting.

Here are 4 tips for joining an online walk:

  1. Access the walk via Zoom on your phone. You can then be active and engaged with your surroundings instead of your screen.
  2. Move around your room. Try different movements like side steps, lunges, dancing, lifting your knees high, walking on tip toes or even lying on your back and wiggling your feet. Find what feels right for you.
  3. Look up, down and out the window. Gain a different perspective by looking at your room in a different way. Look out the window to engage with the weather and world outside.
  4. Be near plants or plant images. Being near greenery is good for our mood and wellbeing. It even works with photos so do spend some time with your houseplants or images of nature.
