How to stop overthinking a decision

Struggling to make a decision? And now you’re stuck in your head overthinking?

Try these tips.

(They won’t make the decision for you, but they will take the pressure off so you can think more clearly).

The path splits - how do we decide which way to go?
  • There is no ideal option.

If there was a simple answer, you would have already chosen it. So don’t feel bad about getting stuck in overthinking here.

  • The future is uncertain.

You’ll never have all the answers, and that’s okay. Sometimes you just have to take the leap and let go of the idea of a perfect choice.

  • Trust you will make the best decision for this situation.

You have to accept that whatever you decide will likely be a bit wrong and a bit right. In a way you can’t choose the wrong thing – it’s just got to be a decision. That decision will move you forward one way or another.

  • Get your energy up.

If you’re feeling tired, hungry or a little down – do something to recharge first so you have the energy to make a good decision.

  • Zoom out.

Focus on what’s important for you now and next. You can then consider how this decision will help you get there.

  • Get input.

Consider if you need some more information or help to make this decision. This will get your thoughts moving and give you a fresh perspective.

  • Size matters.

If this decision isn’t life changing or irreversible, you have some freedom to choose some things that may not work out – at least you’ll get to have some adventures! And if it is big? Trust yourself to handle whatever comes next.
