Washed up on Thames Bankside

Thames Discovery Bankside Walk on an April Saturday morning.

This family walk was run by the Thames Discovery Programme and facilitated by a friendly expert full of knowledge.

Impressions: History of the city written in the waste washed up over centuries on the river’s shore.  The Great Fire of London, the plague, the great stink, the freeze, the wars.  Prehistoric flint, fragment of Victorian plate, broken bottle with softened edges, cow’s toe bone, aged sewage pipes, variety of bricks.  Stones, rocks, sand, rubbish and hidden treasure.  Waves caused by passing boats, brown water, cold, warm, windy, damp.

Question:

Think about what is in your bin right now and the items you’ve discarded.  What does your waste say about how you live and what’s important to you?
