What to do when you can’t do everything

Struggling to do it all? Well, you should!

We live in a demanding world that makes us feel pressure to achieve more and more. To earn more, buy more, devote more to wellness routines, be better partners/friends/parents etc.

But in reality – we are human and we have limits. Finite time, energy and attention. That means we can do more and more – exhausting ourselves – yet still feel that we are not doing enough.

Instead of doing everything in your to do bucket, focus on choosing what matters most

So how can we change this narrative? And give ourselves some space to breathe.

First, acknowledge the myth and accept that doing everything is impossible. (You’re not failing – this is a universal truth).

Then, choose what truly matters. That means letting go of the rest—with compassion. As Oliver Burkeman puts it, instead of treating your to-do list of dreams/goals/responsibilities like a bucket to empty, think of it as a river: a flowing stream from which you pick only a few meaningful things at a time.

It’s a kind and slow shift away from doing, doing, doing. And a move to pausing, getting perspective, recharging and focusing on what matters now. Then repeating that cycle.

Like all shifts, this takes time and can be a bit of a messy slog. But it’s necessary work and you don’t have to do it alone. Get in touch if you’d like some help – I’m here with drop in coaching and sessions to support you.
